Changes to No.10 Bus timetable

From Sunday 16 August 2020 First amended the 10 timetable, primarily to account for increased traffic levels which is causing late running to the current service.

Mondays to Fridays, the service is reduced to every 20 minutes, but all buses run through between Stamford Bridge and Poppleton.

There are more buses on Saturday mornings which should make getting to work easier.

Sunday buses revert back to an irregular service with buses between every 60 and 70 minutes .

Our thanks to Tony Walmsely for sharing this information and an updated Dunnington Bus Timetable (from 16.08.20)

Dunnington in Bloom

Have you been inside Julia’s Garden while taking exercise around and beyond the village this summer? If not, do make a detour and turn in to savour it occasionally. It’s a welcoming quiet place in which to sit down and to notice its wildlife-friendly features and, particularly at this time of year, its apple trees. There is a harvest to be gathered every autumn and anyone in the village is welcome to a share in it. Dunnington hasn’t yet followed the example first set by Todmorden of making small ‘incredible edible’ beds a feature of the local landscape, but the apple trees in Julia’s Garden work on the same principle.

The In Bloom Team hope you will enjoy them.

Derwent Lions

In these unusual times, our dozen members have been unable to be out and about to do our usual summer activities serving the communities of  Dunnington, together with many other villages in East and North Yorkshire.

Our Queen Margaret concerts were cancelled and the coconut shy usually brought out at numerous summer fetes has been put away for the year. Instead we have been using the monies raised with Rocking Rudolph last year to support those in need because of Covid-19. We have:

  • provided financial support to those at the University of York manufacturing face shields to ensure all local care homes had all they needed.
  • purchased tablets for local hospitals so that patients and their families could keep in contact and sometimes, sadly, say goodbye.
  • continuing with our regular financial donations to help support two local food banks supplying meals to the vulnerable and needy in our local communities.

In addition, recently we have started collecting surplus vegetables from Wheldrake allotments for Kitchens for Everyone in York who are making and delivering huge numbers of meals for those in need.

If you would like to make a donation to help us continue to support these good causes, then please go to the link to our  Just Giving page  on our web site https://derwent.lionsclub.co/

Note that members pay for the privilege to belong to Lions to cover insurance and the like, ensuring that all donations are used for charitable causes.

We are keeping under review our usual programme of events over the Christmas holidays - the popular senior citizens event at Elvington Airfield, Rocking Rudolph visiting all the villages and the recycling of Christmas trees to support St Leonard's hospice. Closer to the time we will let everyone know if and how these are to go ahead.

Many people volunteered to support their neighbours through these difficult times. If you wish to continue with supporting your local community, then please consider joining us, either as a member or a friend. Further details can be found on our website  https://derwent.lionsclub.co/

The Poppy Appeal 2020

Dear Reader,

We have all had to come to terms with many lifestyle changes since the Covid pandemic took hold and the Royal British Legion’s main fundraising event, the Poppy Appeal, is no exception. In order to protect our volunteers and the public, the courageous decision has been taken to prohibit all face to face collecting and cash handling by volunteers in the current circumstances. What that means in practise is that there can be no house to house collections this year.  Similarly, I am not allowed to place boxes of poppies and collecting tins in the local shops, offices, pubs, clubs, schools, etc.

I will order and distribute poppy wreaths as previously and will contact those who require them in due course.

Poppies will be available from the larger supermarkets, banks and Post Offices but these outlets will be supplied directly from the Poppy H.Q. at Aylesford and the money will be collected centrally.  Previously, in places like supermarkets, you may have seen poppy collectors and veterans wearing medals to highlight the event and often offering other poppy merchandise for sale. Sadly, that has also had to be forbidden this year.

Details about the Remembrance Day parade and/or service  have yet to be decided locally but may be included in a future edition.
