9. The Fallen

"The Fallen" - Remembered

The identities in military records of the names on the War Memorials of the four parishes have been resolved, except for these six remaining. I would be very pleased to hear from anyone with further information about them, especially military details.

J. Andrew, (Regt/Corps unknown), WW2 (Dunnington).
Undoubtedly this was John Andrew, whose nephew Gary kindly contacted me. He told me that John was a son of Nellie Andrew and her husband, of Hagg Lane, and had gone away to war aged 21 but never returned. However without military details it has not yet been possible to identify his records.

F. Collinson, Middlesex Regt, WW1 (Stockton). There are eleven possible names on the official CWGC list of war dead, but none of these are linked to the Middlesex Regt and none with any link to the village.

W. Gray, (Regt/Corps unknown), WW2 (Dunnington). His name is listed on the WW2 Memorial board within St Nicholas Church, but no information about him has yet been traced in military or civil records.

D. Harrison, Grenadier Guards, WW1 (Stockton). The Depot told the late Terry Cooper that they had not found record of a D. Harrison in surviving documents. A Medal Roll card names a Private David Harrison (16200) in No.2 Company of the 2nd Bn Grenadier Guards for the 1914 Star on 13 Aug 1914. Admitted to hospital in London with gunshot wounds on 3 Nov 1914, he was sent to an orthopaedic hospital on 4 Dec 1914. He is not listed as ‘deceased’, or by CGWC among war dead, so the puzzle remains.

Henry Smith, 9th Bn Northumberland Fusiliers, WW1 (Dunnington). Not identified as such in CWGC records, but there was a Harry Smith in the 9th Bn. He died on 16 Apr 1917, age 26, and is named on the Arras Memorial.  His wife and parents lived in York, but any connection with Stockton is unknown.

Sgt J.W. Smith, Royal Warwickshire Regt, WW1 (Stockton). As yet no record has been identified.
