A Thank You from Dunnington Parish Council

On behalf of the Parish Council I would like to thank the Reverend Nick Bird and his supporters for so quickly forming the Dunnington Community Support Group in response to the Government's announcements to the COVID-19 virus.

I am sure that for many this will be a stressful time and possibly a lonely time for those in self-isolation. It's reassuring to know that challenges such as this brings out the best in people and shows what a community spirit there is in Dunnington.

Dunnington WI

The speaker at our March meeting was Jerry Holland, a former special constable and now Ambassador for Cyber Crime with North Yorkshire Police.

Jerry’s presentation ‘Are You Sure? - Scams!’ explained in detail the various types of scams currently prevalent in Yorkshire. He included many pointers on how to avoid scams in the first place, how to identify each particular scam when it occurs and how to deal with it. Our members found this talk very useful as well as entertaining.

There was an excellent response to our first collection for York Food Banks. Many thanks to everyone for their generosity. The collection box will be available at each future monthly meeting.

The winner of the ‘Special Treasure’ competition was Barbara Cundell.

Dunnington in Bloom

Like everyone else organising activities within local communities, the Bloom team has been forced into a sudden and unwelcome change of plan. Our annual May coffee morning will not be going ahead this year. Will all our other plans be affected? That must remain an open question but our 2020 grass cutting season has already started and as of this moment, the team intends to continue the work of regularly edging our many grass verges to keep them smart.

Before the imposed shutdown, Bloom did not allow the weather to deter it. Intrepid as ever, members were out and about, getting ahead of things. Elsewhere we understand the Great British Spring Clean happens from 20th March to 13th April, but the Bloomers’ spring clean of laybys and ditches along Dunnington’s stretch of the A1079 was completed before the end of February. Not second sight – just forward thinking and action.

2nd Tuesday Rides from Dunnington

A small group of local cyclists have been going out on the second Tuesday of the month at 10.30am from the Cross Keys in Dunnington. We generally cycle around 10 miles and include a cake/bacon butty and coffee stop en route. In March we went via Holtby and Upper Helmsley to Stamford Bridge to Number 10. Great bacon butties and teacakes!

On 14 April we are planning to go to Café Valerie in Wheldrake, route is weather dependent, but cakes are excellent on arrival. We are a group of friends who cycle at their own risk. Helmets and bright jackets are recommended and please bring a spare inner tube with you in case of puncture.

Please come and join us. Any queries to Alison Holmes 07581 149056

Dunnington Players

It is with great disappointment that we have decided to postpone the May performance of “Give Us A Sign” until Autumn. We have discussed the coronavirus situation and agreed that we must consider the health of everyone. By the time you read this notice things may be completely different but we have made our decision on the situation to date.

We will, of course, keep you up to date with developments and let you all know what dates to put into your diaries for AUTUMN!

2020 EVENTS FOR YOUR DIARIES

After long discussions we will not be holding Dunnington Fayre Goes Live in 2020.

The event takes weeks of organising and at the present time we are down to 5 committee members which are all volunteers and it is too much to put on them.

While we take the year out, we will be thinking of new ideas as we feel there are a large number of music events starting up in York and something new is needed to keep it interesting and get back the village support. Any ideas would be gratefully received at info@dunningtoncommunityevents.org.uk

We will be continuing to hold events. Thank you.
