Dusty Wartho

Dusty’s daughter has been in touch to say her mother has died, peacefully in a care home on the Isle of Skye. Dusty and her husband lived on Eastfield Lane, before going to Derwent House and the Beaumont.

Scarecrow Trail

The Scarecrow Trail has now been postponed and will hopefully take place 1-3 May 2021.

At the time this issue of the Grapevine is published we are still unable to have the Church open, so offering refreshments, toilets and the sale of programmes for an event this year is not going to be possible.

Judith Hewitt

In Dunnington there is a phone tree with members of St Nicholas Church ringing, mainly single people, regularly for a friendly chat. If you would like someone to ring you, or know someone who might like a friendly phone call, please contact Judith Hewitt, 488331, or Nick Bird 489349.

We are also trying to deliver a paper copy of the Sunday Services to those who cannot access the internet. If you know someone who might like a copy, please let Judith know.

Retirement of the Archbishop of York

The Archbishop of York is to preach as part of the national online service broadcast by the Church of England on Sunday 7th June at 9.00am. This will be the last day in his role as Archbishop of York. His wife, the Revd Margaret Sentamu, will lead a time of prayer in the service.

The Archbishop said, “I am pleased to have this opportunity for the second time to take part in this online service on what will be my last day in office. Like many of us, I too, am missing being able to worship alongside others. I hope that many will join us on 7th June as we continue this way of worshipping.

"We know that these times will pass and change will come, but our Lord and Saviour, King and Friend never changes. He is the same yesterday, today and for ever - and deserves our never-ending praise! ‘Come let us bow down, kneel and worship the Lord our Maker’ ”.

You will be able to watch the service live or on replay via the Church of England’s Facebook page or the Church of England website.

The Benefice Churches will be making a donation in appreciation of the work the Archbishop and the Revd Margaret Sentamu have done while in the Diocese.

If you wish to make a contribution as an individual, in the present circumstances it would help the staff at Diocesan Office immensely if it can be made by bank transfer, rather than cheque or cash. Please could we therefore ask you to do two things:

Firstly, please make your bank transfer to the York Diocesan Board of Finance account as follows:

Bank Name: Barclays Bank plc
Branch: York City Centre
Account Name: York Diocesan Board of Finance Ltd
Sort Code: 20-99-15
Account Number: 30985759
And as the reference put: ABY GIFT

And secondly, so that the Diocese can compile a list of contributors, please send an email confirming your gift, and adding a message for the Archbishop and Mrs Sentamu if you wish to do so, to the Bishop of Whitby’s PA: mandy.robinson@yorkdiocese.org and again in the subject line put ABY GIFT.

If you have any queries, or would like to contribute but would need to send your gift by post, please could you contact the Bishop of Whitby’s office via the email address above and they will be pleased to help you.

There is a farewell message from the Archbishop in the June issue of 'TheNews' (the Diocesan Mailing).

St Nicholas Church’s donations to IDAS and IRC

Every year St Nicks donates 10% of the money received via the collection plate or standing orders to worthy causes - usually one UK charity and one overseas. This year the PCC have chosen Independent Domestic Abuse Services (IDAS) York and The International Rescue Committee (IRC).

Sadly IDAS is experiencing an increase in the number of victims and survivors contacting them for support and emergency accommodation, and they expect this to increase again when the lockdown ends.

The IRC is having to scale-up their activities following the outbreak of COVID-19 as people living in vulnerable communities will be hit the hardest. The IRC delivers essential health care services, food, medicine and educational sessions on limiting the spread of the virus to refugees and displaced people.

St Nicks has donated £3650 to each charity.
